Recipes: Homemade Cake

I’m one of those people who oohs and aahs over elaborate over the top cakes. But sometimes, a good homemade cake is just as good if not better than a cake you would pay $12 a slice. It wasn’t until a few years ago I became obsessed with cake. I’ve become so picky with cake its not even funny. Store bought cakes from Walmart or the supermarket is downright unacceptable anymore and they taste more like plastic than icing. However, I’m still a fan of the boxed Duncan Hines cake mix. Baking is not easy (at least for me) because you have to be exact with your measurements and follow directions. I like to make up my own directions which is why I’m better at cooking than baking. However, I do have a pretty awesome icing recipe that was given to me recently which I definitely mastered. I will share that recipe in another post.  As I was browsing pinterest I came across these yummy looking homemade cakes. This weekend in NJ isnt going to be that nice so maybe I’ll give one of these recipes a whirl.

Unique Bridesmaid Gifts

I have to say searching for bridesmaid gifts was one of the most stressful parts of planning my wedding. I really wanted to let my bridesmaids know how special they are and wanted to find the perfect gift they could use even after the wedding. Because my wedding was at the beach, I wanted my maids to be as comfortable as possible. So after the ceremony I told them to kick off their heels and slip on a pair of JCrew purple flip flops (kind of like the ones below except purple). In addition to the flippies, I included jewelry accessories to wear on the wedding day. But the challenge I faced was finding something different for each bridesmaid. I ended up going with a simple necklace and earring studs for the girls that wore the strapless dress and a bracelet and hoop earrings for the girls that wore the one strap. The jewelery was simple enough for the girls to wear again after the wedding. Remember, not all of the bridesmaids have to match exactly!

I’m hoping to help you future brides with this collection of bridesmaid gift ideas! Remember, you don’t have to go the traditional route and give jewelery. A nice little thank you gift will do just fine. Just make sure let your bridesmaids know what kind of jewelery (if any) you would like them to wear  the day of the wedding. One source I absolutely recommend is Etsy, especially if you want a customized unique gift. Most of the time, you can message the seller and ask them if they could make a completely custom item for you. Crafters love custom items!! The best part about Etsy is everything is handmade, made from the heart and reasonably priced! Just make sure if you are ordering a custom item, to give the seller enough time to make the product.

Cherry Blossom Wedding Invitations-Semi Custom

When we came home from Florida, we were greeted by the flowering Kwanzan Cherry Tree in full bloom! They don’t have these in Florida (at least not where we were staying) so I was really excited to come home to them at their peak! I love cherry blossom trees, and this spring I was inspired to design a cherry blossom wedding invitation suite for the semi custom line. This wedding suite is completed with hand drawn cherry blossoms paired with a romantic script and block lettering. Perfect for a spring wedding!

Conch Shell Save the Dates: Hot off the Press

These lovely Conch Shell Save the Dates are hot off the press! My lovely bride Nina lives in Florida and since I will be down there, we are going to meet up and chat a little more about her wedding invitations! Nina wanted to include a photo magnet with her Save the Dates but wanted to do something a little extra instead of sending a magnet by itself. We came up with a design printed on ivory cardstock and a detached photo magnet on the bottom. Because Nina is getting married in Marco Island, Florida, she wanted to include a small hand drawn conch shell in her invitation suite.
